I have no idea what this critter is (other than an insect), but it was on my car a couple of days ago. The large version in the lower-right corner is as good an image as I got of it with my 6.0 megapixel camera at 100% size, while the rest is to give a suggestion of scale. That huge, dark chasm beyond the insect towards the top of the image? The small gap created by the trunk of the car.

I actually thought it might be a tick at first, but ticks have eight legs. This guy only had six, and they look like they have tiny little pairs of toes. It had an elephant-like snout with antennae coming out of it... what the gingersnaps is this thing?

Looks more like a Stone Fruit Weevil than an Acorn Weevil.
Then again... it could just be another brain sucking alien.

Numerous Google image searches prove to me that it is indeed an acorn weevil.

A few people back there said it was an acorn weevil... Personally, I don't agree: Its legs are thicker and all of uniform length, that is, the front two aren't a lot longer than the back four. The bristles on it's wing cases are thicker and stick out more, and its body is a lot thicker. It probably wouldn't be able to chew into an acorn without those enlarged front legs to help it get a grip.

@ Dreathe: Do a Google image search for acorn weevil; also look it up on Wikipedia and a few other sites. That's what helped me make up my mind. Remember this thing is less than a quarter-inch long. This is probably a male; the snouts are longer on the females.

Hmmm

Now that I think of it, it's not as GROSS as an evil weevil. It's cuter. <3 But I still don't know what it is. D:
