Vault Brain - Ant Pheromones by DanShive Vault Brain - Ant Pheromones by DanShive
Vault Brain - Vault Brain Loses It

EDIT: Continues in Part 2!

Ant Queen Pheromones are an item in Fallout 3 that temporarily raise the users charisma by 3, but also temporarily lowers their intelligence and perception by 3 each. It's worth noting that this is on a scale of 1 to 10 with 5 being the average.

When I first encountered this item, it seemed odd to me that losing intellect and perceptiveness would make someone a smoother talker. My interpretation was that it temporarily rendered the user a sexy idiot, which still seems problematic given differing genders and sexual orientations, but whatever. Combine that line of thinking with Vault Brain, and here we are.

In fairness, a Charisma boost in Fallout doesn't give you much of a bonus to the actual Speech skill. There's a Speech bonus, true, but it's quite small, even for +3 CHA. So you could just justify that having more Charisma makes you more likeable, which makes people SLIGHTLY better-disposed towards you, meaning your relatively-limited speaking ability (from being a 'tard) isn't as much of a limiting factor. Which does follow, sort of, even if we can't exactly quantify charisma or likeability in real life.

I think your approach is more amusing, though.

(Also yes, I'm so very late, I know.)

She turns into Britney? Should have seen that coming!

...At least she didn't turn into Kevin, though I can't imagine which one is dumber. Him or Britney.

Nice comic, I didn’t bother much with speech while playing Fallout, most of the time I simply killed whatever was causing problems. It would be interesting to see what would happen to Daria if she took Ant nectar instead (+4 strength, -2 intelligence, -2 charisma) , that’s more my style.

I'm actually writing a fallout fanfiction which will eventually have a Daria and Jane cameo.

An interesting thought, but they actually explain how the Charisma implant works about as well as could be expected.

True. But how does the luck Implant work, or the quick healing one? The usual S.P.E.I.A. is all that would be explainable. Charisma and Luck, not so much.

DanShive Featured By Owner Apr 23, 2011
They explain each one when they offer them to you. Those explanations aren't in the wiki (grrrrrr...), but the luck implant has to do with increasing your ability to calculate probability. So it's more artificial luck, knowing what will give you your best odds, but for all intents and purposes...

The charisma one, meanwhile, increases one's ability to detect minute variations in characters faces and general body language.

In short, both are just basically cybernetic sensors that help you in ways that would help you in those areas.

The quick healing one has something to do with a tissue... regenerative... THING. MAN I wish the wiki covered these. Slacking nerds... I guess I could play again and fill in the wiki myself ^^;

So, generally, they actually go and increase your intellegence, and as a side, they also increase your Charisma and Luck... And let's just say that it's quick healing Nannites.

I have a great quote that fits slightly with the pheromone... "I learned long ago that if I keep talking people eventually begin to agree with me."

Also I think of the pheromone like giving a relaxing agent to someone who is nervous. You are calmer so you speak better, but it slows reaction time (perception) and thinking ability. So I guess it is just low grade alcohol or something...

It could also be that it makes EVERYTHING more attracted to you, including yourself. That would explain all of the effects pretty well to me.

I didn't kill her on my first play through, but she did die before I could properly talk to her (DARN YOU, SUPER MUTANTS!) On my second play through, I discovered she was a likable character and I did my best to keep her alive.

I think you might have misinterpreted my criticism of my own explanation. My point was more that the "sexy idiot" explanation doesn't really make since if a woman were dealing with a gay man, a straight woman, a non-sexual, etc. If someone's so hot that even robots are affected, I'd say that's supernatural levels of hotness ^^;

Well, at least it's temporary. Your Vault Brain comics and honestly anything that references Daria makes me want to get the series but I've yet to find it under $50 which is a reasonable price considering how long the show was and the music for it, it's a bit much for something I may watch through once and maybe watch favorite episodes individually after that.

I've never gotten stronger after drinking a beer. So what things do for you stat-wise you can never count on. Except... Y'know... the Drugs. Still waste of Pheremones, you're supposed to use them to help a girl get married by turning her into a sexy idiot thus forcing her love interest to stop his pursuit of becoming a priest.

Well that or start a rumor that he got her pregnant. Either works.

That quest is sort of smarmy now that I think about it... But I'm pretty sure it gives good karma. So it must be the right thing to do.

Fortunately, you're not out of luck in regard to that quest if you use them for something else, as you can buy Ant Pheromones at the chem shop in Rivet City. It's about 100 caps one would probably rather not spend, but they are there.

Oh, there's 3 you can get then. One in Greyditch, one in Shalebridge... or is it 2? New Vegas has pushed like 90% of my FO3 knowledge out of my head. Because that's how the human brain works. Sometimes it gets full 46. Spoon.

But that said, I don't remember what I was saying. I wish I had more Jack Bower type replies in Fallout. Like that scientist that made the fire ants. You should be allowed to slam him in a wall, and then say "Fix it right, or I'll fix you for good!" More games should have altruistic violence.

I'm more likely to lash out in games due to the limited communication options. Ideally, yes, I would use my words, but I'm limited to the words the game has provided for me. Where words fail, the flamethrower picks up the slack.

It's the sort of thing that makes me curse at my computer. Human being? Will almost never swear at them. My computer is being annoying? Bleep city.

Well, action games it's unavoidable. But with RPGs there's usually a non-violent alternative. In the good ones anyways. Otherwise it's usually silly cartoon violence. Mario is so much more sinister if you put it in a realistic frame of being. A one (Sometimes 2) man army committing tantamount to genocide on an entire people due to their overtly lustful ruler kidnapped one woman, who by all rights with her position as a princess isn't even the appointed leader of the country.

Heck, most of them aren't even trying to hinder you. You go to their worlds, their levels. And just start smashing anyone out for a stroll or commuting to work. Mario is pretty evil. But it's cartoon violence. So it's cool.

I've wound up being violent towards villagers in Fable games entirely due to them getting on my nerves and there being no way to simply say "guys, I appreciate the thought, BUT I WANT MY SPACE. STOP FOLLOWING ME." I even tried using scary magic with the safety on to scare them away, but it just made them behave more annoyingly and like indecisive stalkers ^^;
