Everything I have to say is pretty much in the image above. I know some people who might find this helpful, though I suspect I won't be winning any "you've changed the way I look at Illustrator" awards any time soon ^^;

Ugh, I've done similar piccies in Freehand. And it gets maddening with even more detail and overlapping parts.

Great breakdown of the process man.

I do shading in Flash, but I do use Illustrator for digital inking. For what I normally do, coloring in Flash is much faster, but I hate the ink and brush tools in Flash.

That looks like how I'd expect it to go in pretty much any vector drawing program. Flash's "fill tool" or whatever they call it is certainly above and beyond the standard set of vector drawing tools (from a developer's standpoint).

Sometimes I draw all the line art first, with vector objects that have outlines and no fill. Then I do the coloring by creating objects with fill and no outline, and put them behind the line art objects. The resulting potential for "coloring outside the lines" may actually be desired, depending on the style of the piece.

I actually did that a lot for a class project involving coloring a toucan (though it only really made sense for the beak, but I'm still learning, darn it!).

AAggh! So much stuff, inking in illustrator, importing, coloring in flash, import again, rub a baboon on it!...I know how to use a pencil...

I hate the pen tool in Illustrator, tho all my professional illustrator friends swear by it. Maybe one of these days I'll summit the learning curve and achieve skills of an artist. :paranoid:
